Empty Canvas:
Empty Canvas was created as an interactive performance during Salam Yousry’s Singular solo exhibition that took place at SOMA Art in April 2021.
As a multidisciplinary artist with 20 years of experience in performance, Salam likes to explore possibilities that can create a different life for a canvas.
The idea was to create a painting by involving the audience in the process of creation, through games, discussions and storytelling.
Through a game, one of the audience was chosen to be portrayed on the empty canvas that was filled during the hours of the performance.
Through storytelling and discussions, the painting developed and was affected by the impressions and suggestions the audience had.
Through another game, one of the audience was chosen by the group/community/audience, to receive it as a gift.
The person who acquired the painting was asked to invite the group for dinner at their place to spend an extra time together as a group/community, while the painting was hung at their apartment.
